Ceramic Art Project
This project began as a study of Pre/Protodynastic artwork by duplicating these elements in a serious manner, meaning one that actually results in a useful product. I have included elements from Hierakonpolis Tomb 100, Eastern Desert Rock Art and other prominent iconography from seals, labels and pottery. This is not meant to reproduce any artifact or suggest there may have been artifacts like these. This is meant simply to be a study of how these would be drawn from an artists viewpoint.
I also feel that so much of the art inspired by Ancient Egypt reflects such overly colorful New Kingdom designs that a change to more subdued earth tones may be a welcome one.
Boats and Royal titularies are the central elements. Animals and people are supporting elements. I chose shades of yellow from the background of the painted tomb and shades of red from the Gebelein cloth. Black and red seemed proper for the central elements with white adding an aesthetic highlight.
These tiles are 4"x4" and the plates are 11" in diameter. I plan to produce a series of at least 4 plates and a series of serekhs representing Dynasties 0 and 1.
